The issue of immigration needs to be addressed seriously, not simply
with one-liners at election time. Kerry promises more, but promises
can be empty. For Bush, immigrants are to be courted for elections
and also used as fodder.
The number of immigrants who were admitted for
lawful permanent residence in the U.S. in 2003 was 705,827.
Civil rights groups in the U.S. have expressed
their concerns over the implementation of biometrics in US passports,
and what they see as the intrusive nature of biometrics technology.
An Extension of Requirement for Biometric Passport
Issuance by Visa Waiver Program Countries went into effect this month.
The requirement for Visa Waiver travelers to have biometrics included
in their passports has been extended for one year, to October 26,
2005. All newly issued passports must be biometrically enabled by
this time.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly
Immigration and Naturalization Services, INS) continues to rollout
its immigration information by appointment system called
InfoPass,
with three new USCIS districts added last week. Atlanta, Boston and
Houston are the newest additions, making the system now available
in almost all major metropolitan areas with large immigrant populations
President Bush proposed a new
temporary worker
program to match willing foreign workers with willing U.S. employers
when no Americans can be found to fill the jobs. The program would
be open to new foreign workers, and to the undocumented men and woman
. The
program should not connect participation to a
green
card or
citizenship. However, it
should not preclude a participant from obtaining green card status
through the existing process...
